[00:00:13] Welcome to the Paranormal Mysteries podcast, and thank you for being here. I am your host, Nick Ryan. As always, I'd like to start off the show by saying a huge thank you to all of our wonderful patrons. Your support and generosity is truly amazing, and it makes our podcast possible.
[00:01:03] Our first story of the night comes from Sebastian. Sebastian's story is called The Witch's Curse.
[00:01:11] Sebastian says,
[00:03:48] Thank you for reading my family's story. Our next story of the night comes from Sophie. Sophie's story is called Last Goodbye.
[00:04:02] Sophie says,
[00:04:02] Hi, I've been listening to your podcast for quite a while, and I finally decided to open up. I've always believed in the paranormal, and have had a few experiences, but this one was the most heartwarming.
[00:04:16] My dad's gran had passed, and we had just said our goodbyes, and were now on our way to a big lunch, with all of our family who knew her.
[00:04:25] Everyone was sitting down and talking. There were two tables, one for the kids, and one for the adults, and I was ten at the time, so I was at the kids' table.
[00:04:34] When I saw the door open, and it was clear, so I could have seen somebody there, but there was no one there.
[00:04:41] At first I thought it was the wind, but there was an outside door which no one had come out of recently.
[00:04:46] And finally I saw her, my great gran, with white hair and a white dress, just as I last saw her.
[00:04:55] Thanks for listening, Sophia.
[00:05:01] Our next story of the night comes from Tracy.
[00:05:04] Tracy's story is called Out of Body Experience and Remote Viewing.
[00:05:09] Tracy says,
[00:05:10] There have been several incidences of leaving my body and flying above roads and into moving cars, houses, and apartment buildings.
[00:05:18] The first time I experienced this, I was in the 8th grade.
[00:05:22] I had a dream that I flew into the backseat of a purple car with a black roof,
[00:05:28] and the driver of that car saw me, got scared, and spun out so that his rear wheels were hanging over a safety fence
[00:05:35] to keep cars from going off into a ravine.
[00:05:38] The day after that dream, I was on the bus going to school,
[00:05:42] and there was the same purple car with the black roof,
[00:05:46] hanging just where I had dreamt it would be.
[00:05:49] In another instance that year, I dreamt that I saw a woman getting raped in her apartment.
[00:05:55] I saw the men who were doing this tour.
[00:05:58] I could see what they were wearing, and what they were saying to her,
[00:06:01] what her apartment looked like, and all the details of this attack.
[00:06:06] I told no one of this, as I thought it was a nightmare.
[00:06:10] Within the week, I saw a story in the newspaper of the attack in the same building I had seen in this dream.
[00:06:17] There are far more instances of this occurring throughout my life,
[00:06:21] seeing more horrific events each time.
[00:06:23] Though my friends think this is something cool,
[00:06:26] I wish I had never seen any of it,
[00:06:29] and I hope that I do not experience this again.
[00:06:32] Our next story comes from Tom.
[00:06:38] Tom's story is called,
[00:06:40] Things I Can't Explain.
[00:06:43] Tom says,
[00:06:44] Hi, I've been listening to your podcast for a few months now,
[00:06:48] whilst walking my dog,
[00:06:49] and I've caught up on all the episodes.
[00:06:51] I really enjoy the content, keep it up.
[00:06:54] Anyway, my dealings with the paranormal
[00:06:57] spread over years of various incidents
[00:07:00] that range from bangs and footsteps
[00:07:02] to outright apparitions.
[00:07:05] I'll start off by telling you
[00:07:06] that since I was a kid,
[00:07:08] my family has been heavily into spiritual stuff,
[00:07:11] particularly my mom and sister.
[00:07:14] We lost my father when I was five,
[00:07:16] and I think it was a way for my mom
[00:07:18] to deal with losing her husband.
[00:07:21] Particularly,
[00:07:22] as two years after my dad passed,
[00:07:24] we lost my uncle,
[00:07:26] mom's brother,
[00:07:27] who she was extremely close to.
[00:07:29] I remember growing up with them,
[00:07:31] and regularly visiting mediums and spiritualist churches.
[00:07:35] I had absolutely no interest in any of this.
[00:07:38] However,
[00:07:39] as I grew up,
[00:07:40] more and more strange things would happen to me.
[00:07:43] One time,
[00:07:44] a family friend was around,
[00:07:45] and during a conversation with me and my mom,
[00:07:48] he stopped mid-sentence,
[00:07:50] turned completely white,
[00:07:51] and asked,
[00:07:52] who had been standing on the stairs behind us.
[00:07:55] There was no one else around,
[00:07:57] and our friend said he could only see legs,
[00:08:00] an apparition from the waist down.
[00:08:02] When my mom next went to church,
[00:08:05] the medium told her that my uncle had been visiting,
[00:08:07] and was making light of his new situation.
[00:08:10] You see,
[00:08:11] he had been in a wheelchair for many years,
[00:08:13] leading up to his death,
[00:08:15] because of suffering from MS.
[00:08:17] He was showing us
[00:08:18] that he had his legs back.
[00:08:20] Another evening,
[00:08:22] I and a mate were in the lounge,
[00:08:24] watching football,
[00:08:25] when he reached up to the top shelf,
[00:08:27] and picked up a small VW Beetle car.
[00:08:30] He asked what it was,
[00:08:32] but I had never ever seen it before.
[00:08:34] We didn't give any more thought to it,
[00:08:36] and carried on with the footy.
[00:08:39] Later that evening,
[00:08:40] my mom came in,
[00:08:41] and said she had been to a sitting with a medium,
[00:08:44] and started telling us
[00:08:45] that again,
[00:08:46] my uncle had been around.
[00:08:47] She told us that my uncle
[00:08:49] was showing her a VW badge,
[00:08:51] and then started telling us a story
[00:08:53] about when they were kids.
[00:08:54] One Christmas,
[00:08:56] my mom asked her brother
[00:08:57] what he wanted,
[00:08:58] and he said,
[00:08:59] a Volkswagen Beetle,
[00:09:01] meaning a real one.
[00:09:02] As a joke,
[00:09:03] my mom bought him a toy one.
[00:09:05] When she started telling me
[00:09:07] and my friend,
[00:09:08] I nearly fell off my chair.
[00:09:09] We grabbed the car
[00:09:11] down from the top shelf,
[00:09:12] and I asked if this was it.
[00:09:14] When my mom saw it,
[00:09:16] she burst out crying.
[00:09:17] She hadn't seen that
[00:09:18] since they were kids,
[00:09:20] and the last she knew,
[00:09:21] it would have still been
[00:09:22] in his box of old belongings
[00:09:24] back at my grandparents' house.
[00:09:26] Just writing this
[00:09:28] makes my hair
[00:09:28] stand on end.
[00:09:31] Other stories from the same house
[00:09:32] I grew up in
[00:09:33] include seeing strange lights
[00:09:34] in my room.
[00:09:35] I was about 16 at this point.
[00:09:38] There were blue lights,
[00:09:40] the kind you got
[00:09:41] from a laser pen,
[00:09:42] but they weren't hitting the wall
[00:09:43] or solid object,
[00:09:45] like if you shone
[00:09:45] a laser pen.
[00:09:46] They were low to the ground
[00:09:48] and very slowly moved
[00:09:49] from ground to ceiling,
[00:09:51] mid-air,
[00:09:52] then disappear.
[00:09:53] I lay in bed watching them
[00:09:55] and was completely freaked out.
[00:09:58] Another night,
[00:09:59] my eldest sister
[00:10:00] was staying over.
[00:10:01] She was in the middle
[00:10:02] of moving flats,
[00:10:03] so she was crashing at hours
[00:10:05] for a night or two.
[00:10:06] Anyway,
[00:10:07] this night
[00:10:08] we were all just chilling
[00:10:09] and having a laugh
[00:10:10] in my room
[00:10:10] like we did
[00:10:11] when we were kids.
[00:10:13] My older brother,
[00:10:14] sister,
[00:10:15] and me.
[00:10:16] We decided to call it a night
[00:10:18] and they told me
[00:10:19] to turn off the light
[00:10:19] so we could go to sleep.
[00:10:21] Even though I was furthest
[00:10:22] from the light switch,
[00:10:24] being the youngest,
[00:10:25] I did as I was told
[00:10:26] and made my way
[00:10:27] over and turned off the light.
[00:10:30] As I turned
[00:10:30] and walked toward my bed,
[00:10:32] there,
[00:10:33] straight in front of me,
[00:10:34] was a small shadow figure
[00:10:36] standing face to face with me.
[00:10:38] It was around four feet tall
[00:10:39] and was blacker
[00:10:40] than anything
[00:10:41] I have ever seen.
[00:10:42] The room was dark,
[00:10:44] but the streetlights outside
[00:10:45] meant I could see quite well.
[00:10:48] This thing
[00:10:49] was there,
[00:10:50] straight in front of me.
[00:10:51] I shouted to my brother
[00:10:52] to flick the light on.
[00:10:54] They were laughing
[00:10:55] to start with,
[00:10:56] but after realizing
[00:10:57] I was being deadly serious,
[00:10:59] he turned it on.
[00:11:00] Nothing.
[00:11:01] The room, however,
[00:11:02] was freezing,
[00:11:03] like we'd had windows open
[00:11:04] all evening.
[00:11:06] That night,
[00:11:07] we kept the light on
[00:11:08] and didn't sleep much.
[00:11:10] I've got many more stories
[00:11:11] from childhood
[00:11:12] to adulthood
[00:11:13] that I will send you
[00:11:14] if you're interested.
[00:11:15] Thanks for your time.
[00:11:17] Tom,
[00:11:18] from England.
[00:11:22] Our next story
[00:11:23] comes from Dakota.
[00:11:25] Dakota's story
[00:11:25] is called
[00:11:26] Demonic House.
[00:11:28] Dakota says,
[00:11:30] It all happened
[00:11:30] four years ago,
[00:11:32] yet I will never forget
[00:11:33] my experience.
[00:11:34] I and my father
[00:11:36] went to his girlfriend's
[00:11:37] for a few days
[00:11:38] when I was 16 years old.
[00:11:40] When we got there,
[00:11:41] it immediately felt
[00:11:43] off
[00:11:43] as I stepped out
[00:11:45] into the yard.
[00:11:46] As we began
[00:11:47] to walk up
[00:11:48] to the porch,
[00:11:49] I had seen something
[00:11:50] standing in the window.
[00:11:51] I just thought
[00:11:52] that it was
[00:11:53] my father's girlfriend,
[00:11:54] yet when we went in,
[00:11:56] it turned out
[00:11:57] that she had left
[00:11:57] to go to the grocery store,
[00:11:59] so I thought maybe
[00:12:00] my mind was playing
[00:12:01] tricks on me.
[00:12:02] As the day went on,
[00:12:04] I just continued
[00:12:05] to feel off,
[00:12:06] yet I felt like
[00:12:07] the dogs did too,
[00:12:08] especially when the dogs
[00:12:10] shook with fear
[00:12:11] anytime they were
[00:12:12] in or near
[00:12:13] the living room
[00:12:14] or the yard.
[00:12:15] Later that night,
[00:12:17] I slept in the living room,
[00:12:18] yet I felt
[00:12:19] as if I was being watched.
[00:12:21] Then I felt
[00:12:22] someone grab my ankle.
[00:12:23] I looked,
[00:12:24] and there was nobody.
[00:12:26] So I got creeped out
[00:12:27] and decided to go
[00:12:28] get something to drink
[00:12:29] and to stay
[00:12:30] in the kitchen,
[00:12:31] which was the only place
[00:12:32] that felt good.
[00:12:34] When I stepped in,
[00:12:35] all of a sudden
[00:12:36] I saw red eyes
[00:12:37] from the windows,
[00:12:38] as if someone
[00:12:39] was staring in
[00:12:40] and watching me.
[00:12:42] I locked the door.
[00:12:43] I was really freaked out,
[00:12:45] so I thought
[00:12:45] that I should hurry
[00:12:46] and go to sleep,
[00:12:47] that maybe
[00:12:48] I could hurry
[00:12:49] and get this night
[00:12:50] over with.
[00:12:51] Later that night,
[00:12:53] I woke up.
[00:12:54] I was somehow
[00:12:55] on the porch,
[00:12:56] which is weird
[00:12:57] due to the fact
[00:12:58] that I'm a light sleeper,
[00:12:59] and I've never
[00:13:00] sleepwalked,
[00:13:01] but I just thought
[00:13:02] that a prank
[00:13:02] was being played.
[00:13:03] So I tried to go in,
[00:13:05] but the door
[00:13:05] was completely locked.
[00:13:07] Then I heard
[00:13:08] something behind me.
[00:13:09] As I looked,
[00:13:10] I instantly regretted it.
[00:13:12] It was a shadow
[00:13:13] in the shape
[00:13:14] of my father,
[00:13:15] yet it had big,
[00:13:16] glowing eyes,
[00:13:17] and I felt
[00:13:18] an immediate heavy,
[00:13:19] dark,
[00:13:20] and evil presence.
[00:13:21] I froze in fear
[00:13:22] till my dad
[00:13:23] had woken up
[00:13:24] and wondered
[00:13:24] where I was.
[00:13:25] So my father
[00:13:26] found me
[00:13:27] and opened the door,
[00:13:28] seeing me standing
[00:13:29] out there.
[00:13:30] As he opened the door,
[00:13:32] my father
[00:13:32] had seen
[00:13:33] why I was frozen
[00:13:34] and scared.
[00:13:36] He locked eyes
[00:13:36] with it.
[00:13:37] Then I finally
[00:13:38] turned around
[00:13:39] and realized
[00:13:40] my dad was beginning
[00:13:41] to have a heart attack.
[00:13:43] I stayed in the hospital
[00:13:44] that night,
[00:13:45] and after,
[00:13:46] I never went back
[00:13:47] to his girlfriend's house.
[00:13:49] To this day,
[00:13:50] I still have nightmares
[00:13:51] of it.
[00:13:52] I've also had
[00:13:53] many panic attacks
[00:13:54] after.
[00:13:55] There are more details,
[00:13:56] but this is already
[00:13:57] long enough.
[00:13:59] Thank you
[00:14:00] if you share this.

[00:14:37] and I'll be right back
[00:14:39] after these brief messages.
[00:14:45] Our next story
[00:14:46] comes from Cassandra.
[00:14:48] Cassandra says,
[00:14:49] Hey,
[00:14:49] I just found your podcast
[00:14:51] and I'm hooked.
[00:14:52] I have had so many experiences
[00:14:53] in my life
[00:14:54] and was excited
[00:14:55] for the opportunity
[00:14:56] to share them
[00:14:57] with you and others
[00:14:58] who believe
[00:14:58] in the paranormal.
[00:14:59] I would love to send you
[00:15:00] more stories
[00:15:01] after this one,
[00:15:02] but to put them all
[00:15:03] in one email
[00:15:04] would be too long.
[00:15:06] So I must preface
[00:15:07] this story
[00:15:07] with some family history.
[00:15:09] Growing up,
[00:15:10] my grandpa owned
[00:15:11] a farmhouse in Michigan,
[00:15:13] which was actually built
[00:15:14] by my great-grandparents,
[00:15:15] and only people
[00:15:16] in my family
[00:15:17] had lived there
[00:15:18] since it was built
[00:15:19] in the 1920s.
[00:15:21] This house
[00:15:22] was definitely haunted.
[00:15:24] As a kid,
[00:15:25] I have clear memories
[00:15:26] of lights
[00:15:27] turning on by themselves,
[00:15:28] loud thuds
[00:15:29] from the attic,
[00:15:30] and once in a while,
[00:15:32] my sister and I
[00:15:33] were in bed
[00:15:34] in our shared room.
[00:15:35] Our bedroom door
[00:15:36] flung open,
[00:15:37] remained open
[00:15:38] for what felt
[00:15:38] like two whole minutes,
[00:15:40] and then
[00:15:41] slowly closed.
[00:15:43] We had become
[00:15:44] used to the feeling
[00:15:44] of being watched
[00:15:45] almost constantly,
[00:15:46] but it didn't feel
[00:15:48] particularly negative,
[00:15:49] just spooky
[00:15:50] as a kid.
[00:15:51] My first paranormal
[00:15:53] experience that I remember
[00:15:54] was in this house.
[00:15:56] I was probably
[00:15:57] in fifth grade.
[00:15:58] I was in our backyard
[00:15:59] in the pool
[00:16:00] by myself.
[00:16:01] My sister
[00:16:02] didn't want to swim
[00:16:03] with me that day.
[00:16:04] This house
[00:16:05] had a door
[00:16:06] from the outside
[00:16:06] to the basement,
[00:16:08] which I could see
[00:16:08] clearly from the pool.
[00:16:10] I remember first
[00:16:11] feeling like I was
[00:16:12] being watched,
[00:16:13] but I just kept playing.
[00:16:14] I took a glance
[00:16:16] back at the house,
[00:16:17] and I saw a man
[00:16:18] standing from inside
[00:16:19] the basement door,
[00:16:20] behind the screen,
[00:16:22] looking straight at me.
[00:16:23] He didn't look
[00:16:24] fully solid
[00:16:25] like a real
[00:16:26] physical person does.
[00:16:27] He looked
[00:16:28] partially transparent.
[00:16:29] This happened
[00:16:30] fourteen years ago,
[00:16:31] and I'm getting goosebumps
[00:16:32] just thinking about it.
[00:16:34] He was relatively tall.
[00:16:36] He had dark brown hair
[00:16:37] that was sort of shaggy.
[00:16:39] I don't remember
[00:16:40] what he was wearing,
[00:16:41] likely because
[00:16:42] I was staring
[00:16:42] at his face
[00:16:43] this whole time.
[00:16:45] My child mind
[00:16:46] processed his age
[00:16:47] as something along
[00:16:48] the lines
[00:16:49] of a grown-up,
[00:16:50] but not super old,
[00:16:51] maybe my parents' age.
[00:16:53] I don't remember
[00:16:54] exactly how he disappeared.
[00:16:56] I must have blinked,
[00:16:57] and he was gone.
[00:16:58] I didn't tell anyone,
[00:17:00] because any time
[00:17:01] I told my dad
[00:17:02] about creepy things
[00:17:03] in the house,
[00:17:04] he would discredit me.
[00:17:05] When I was a kid,
[00:17:07] I had a sketchbook,
[00:17:08] and I used it often.
[00:17:10] After seeing this man,
[00:17:11] I drew a picture of him,
[00:17:12] including the house
[00:17:13] and the doorframe
[00:17:14] he was in.
[00:17:15] It wasn't very detailed,
[00:17:17] but I had remembered
[00:17:18] his height,
[00:17:19] his build,
[00:17:20] hair,
[00:17:20] and face shape.
[00:17:22] That same year,
[00:17:23] I went on a trip
[00:17:24] with my great-aunt
[00:17:25] and uncle.
[00:17:26] I had totally forgotten
[00:17:27] about this incident
[00:17:28] at the moment
[00:17:29] when my great-aunt
[00:17:30] asked to look through
[00:17:32] my sketchbook.
[00:17:33] I said,
[00:17:33] sure.
[00:17:34] She got to the photo
[00:17:35] I drew of the man
[00:17:36] and stopped,
[00:17:37] and she looked sort of
[00:17:38] shocked and confused.
[00:17:40] She said,
[00:17:41] who's this?
[00:17:42] I told her that I would
[00:17:43] tell her the story
[00:17:44] if she promised
[00:17:45] not to make fun of me.
[00:17:46] After telling her the story,
[00:17:48] she said,
[00:17:49] I think you saw my cousin.
[00:17:50] This looks like him.
[00:17:51] He died in the upstairs
[00:17:53] bedroom of the house
[00:17:54] when he was in his 30s.
[00:17:56] She explained
[00:17:56] his dark,
[00:17:57] shaggy hair,
[00:17:58] his high cheekbones,
[00:17:59] and how he was tall.
[00:18:01] She told me how he died,
[00:18:03] though I don't remember exactly.
[00:18:05] Just that he had been
[00:18:06] in the hospital for a while
[00:18:07] before coming back
[00:18:08] to the house
[00:18:09] where he died
[00:18:10] shortly after returning.
[00:18:12] This still amazes me
[00:18:13] to this day.
[00:18:14] It makes sense to me now
[00:18:16] why the spirit
[00:18:17] didn't feel negative
[00:18:18] at all.
[00:18:18] He was just a family member
[00:18:20] who was glad
[00:18:21] that someone
[00:18:21] had the ability
[00:18:22] to see him.
[00:18:23] When I was six,
[00:18:24] my Uncle Jeff
[00:18:25] actually died
[00:18:26] in the upstairs bedroom.
[00:18:28] After he passed,
[00:18:29] I remember more things
[00:18:30] happening in the house,
[00:18:32] including hearing someone
[00:18:33] walking up and down
[00:18:34] the stairs
[00:18:35] when no one else
[00:18:36] was in the house
[00:18:37] or upstairs.
[00:18:38] He lived upstairs,
[00:18:40] and when I was a kid,
[00:18:41] the sound of the stairs
[00:18:42] creaking meant
[00:18:44] that Uncle Jeff
[00:18:45] was coming down the stairs
[00:18:46] to hang out
[00:18:47] or just to say hi.
[00:18:48] I haven't been to that house
[00:18:50] in maybe eight years,
[00:18:51] but I often think
[00:18:52] about going back
[00:18:53] to see what I would
[00:18:54] encounter.
[00:18:55] The house was sold
[00:18:57] for the first time
[00:18:57] to someone other
[00:18:58] than our family.
[00:19:00] I often wonder
[00:19:01] what kind of paranormal
[00:19:02] experiences
[00:19:03] they have had
[00:19:04] with my family members
[00:19:05] who have passed.
[00:19:07] I would love to share
[00:19:08] more stories.
[00:19:09] I hope this one makes it
[00:19:10] on the podcast.
[00:19:11] Best wishes,
[00:19:13] Cassandra.
[00:19:17] Our next story of the night
[00:19:18] comes from Amina.
[00:19:20] Amina says,
[00:19:21] Hello.
[00:19:21] I have been listening
[00:19:22] to your podcast
[00:19:23] for a little while now,
[00:19:24] and I thought I'd share
[00:19:25] my experience.
[00:19:26] My friend Amy and I
[00:19:28] have been friends
[00:19:28] for about five years.
[00:19:30] When we were first
[00:19:31] hanging out
[00:19:31] and having fun,
[00:19:32] she told me
[00:19:33] that sometimes
[00:19:34] the other side
[00:19:35] communicates
[00:19:35] through her.
[00:19:37] I believe her
[00:19:38] because she is my friend,
[00:19:39] but I had never
[00:19:40] experienced this
[00:19:41] with her or others.
[00:19:43] One evening,
[00:19:44] she called me
[00:19:45] around 11 p.m.,
[00:19:46] which was uncharacteristic,
[00:19:47] of her,
[00:19:48] and she was crying,
[00:19:49] telling me that
[00:19:49] there is a phrase
[00:19:50] in her head
[00:19:51] that she couldn't get out,
[00:19:53] and she feels
[00:19:53] that the message
[00:19:54] is for me.
[00:19:56] The only problem
[00:19:57] was that it didn't
[00:19:58] seem to be in English.
[00:19:59] I asked her to tell me
[00:20:01] what the phrase was,
[00:20:02] and she said this,
[00:20:04] Kunta Kalbi
[00:20:05] Fa Ta Na Di Da
[00:20:07] So you can imagine
[00:20:09] my confusion
[00:20:09] when she said that to me.
[00:20:11] I asked her
[00:20:12] if she was sure,
[00:20:13] and I tried to help
[00:20:14] her calm down,
[00:20:15] but she was sure
[00:20:16] this was real,
[00:20:17] and that it was
[00:20:18] a message for me.
[00:20:19] I didn't get it,
[00:20:21] and having little solution
[00:20:22] for her,
[00:20:23] I thought,
[00:20:23] maybe this is
[00:20:24] a different language.
[00:20:26] One way to know
[00:20:27] is by using
[00:20:27] Google Translate.
[00:20:29] You can speak to it
[00:20:30] in the language
[00:20:31] you want,
[00:20:32] and have it
[00:20:32] translate to English.
[00:20:34] Being a Google fan,
[00:20:36] I told her to use it.
[00:20:37] She spoke into the computer
[00:20:39] while I was on the phone,
[00:20:40] and when she was
[00:20:41] done speaking,
[00:20:42] she started reading
[00:20:43] the English translation,
[00:20:44] which was,
[00:20:45] You are my heart,
[00:20:47] stubborn girl.
[00:20:48] To which I immediately
[00:20:49] started crying.
[00:20:51] I said,
[00:20:52] What language did it
[00:20:53] detect that you
[00:20:54] were speaking?
[00:20:54] She said,
[00:20:56] Arabic.
[00:20:57] Mind you,
[00:20:58] she didn't speak
[00:20:58] Arabic,
[00:20:59] so her pronunciation
[00:21:00] wasn't the best
[00:21:01] of the words.
[00:21:02] She didn't know
[00:21:03] this about me yet,
[00:21:05] but my grandfather
[00:21:06] helped raise me
[00:21:06] before he passed away,
[00:21:08] and he had a very
[00:21:09] profound impact
[00:21:10] on my life.
[00:21:11] One thing was,
[00:21:13] he used to tell
[00:21:14] my mom that I was
[00:21:15] almost too stubborn
[00:21:16] for my own good.
[00:21:17] He was fluent
[00:21:18] in Arabic
[00:21:19] and many other languages,
[00:21:21] but he used to speak
[00:21:22] in Arabic to me
[00:21:23] when I was a child.
[00:21:25] She didn't know
[00:21:25] any of this,
[00:21:26] not the stubborn,
[00:21:28] the grandfather,
[00:21:29] none of it.
[00:21:30] Once I could catch
[00:21:31] my breath enough
[00:21:32] to speak,
[00:21:33] I told her,
[00:21:34] and we were both
[00:21:35] amazed that something
[00:21:36] like that happened.
[00:21:37] It is still with me.
[00:21:39] Thanks for having
[00:21:40] the podcast.
[00:21:41] Amina.
[00:21:45] Our last story
[00:21:46] of the night
[00:21:47] comes from Eric.
[00:21:48] Eric's story
[00:21:49] is called
[00:21:50] Man in the Top Hat.
[00:21:52] Eric says,
[00:21:53] I just found your podcast
[00:21:55] and I enjoy it very much.
[00:21:56] I was binge listening
[00:21:58] at work
[00:21:58] when I heard the show
[00:21:59] from May 17th
[00:22:01] and the story
[00:22:02] of the man
[00:22:02] in the top hat,
[00:22:03] and I froze.
[00:22:05] I had a very
[00:22:06] similar experience,
[00:22:07] which I hadn't spoken
[00:22:08] of for 56 years.
[00:22:11] I was nine
[00:22:12] in 1964,
[00:22:13] asleep in my bed.
[00:22:15] It was late summer,
[00:22:16] and it had been
[00:22:17] raining lightly,
[00:22:18] and the air was
[00:22:19] warm and humid,
[00:22:20] so I had the window
[00:22:21] over my bed open.
[00:22:22] I don't remember
[00:22:23] what time of the morning
[00:22:24] it was,
[00:22:25] but the house was dark,
[00:22:26] and everyone was asleep.
[00:22:28] I remember
[00:22:29] that something
[00:22:30] woke me up.
[00:22:31] I can't recall what,
[00:22:32] but for a few minutes,
[00:22:34] I lie awake
[00:22:34] in my bed,
[00:22:35] in the dark,
[00:22:36] just listening.
[00:22:37] It was very quiet,
[00:22:39] and the air was still,
[00:22:40] yet I had this intense
[00:22:41] feeling
[00:22:42] that someone was
[00:22:43] outside the window,
[00:22:44] even though I heard
[00:22:45] nothing.
[00:22:47] I laid there a long time,
[00:22:48] but I couldn't resist
[00:22:49] the urge,
[00:22:50] and I got up
[00:22:51] and stood on my bed,
[00:22:52] and with my face
[00:22:54] close to the window,
[00:22:55] I pulled back
[00:22:56] the curtain.
[00:22:57] Right there in front of me,
[00:22:58] with only the screen
[00:22:59] between us,
[00:23:00] I clearly saw
[00:23:01] the face of a man
[00:23:02] in a tall,
[00:23:03] top hat
[00:23:04] and a cape
[00:23:05] or overcoat
[00:23:06] with the collar
[00:23:07] turned up.
[00:23:09] Although it was
[00:23:09] a dark and moonless night,
[00:23:11] I could clearly see him
[00:23:12] in the ambient light
[00:23:13] of the neighborhood,
[00:23:14] or at least
[00:23:15] his silhouette.
[00:23:17] Later,
[00:23:17] I remembered
[00:23:18] that I couldn't see
[00:23:19] his face,
[00:23:20] almost as if
[00:23:20] he didn't have one.
[00:23:22] We were face to face
[00:23:23] for maybe five seconds
[00:23:24] when I screamed,
[00:23:26] Hey you!
[00:23:26] Get out of here!
[00:23:28] He stood for maybe
[00:23:29] two seconds more,
[00:23:30] and then turned
[00:23:31] and ran for the street.
[00:23:33] Suddenly,
[00:23:33] the lights came on.
[00:23:34] My little brother
[00:23:35] was standing on his bed.
[00:23:37] My parents were at the door,
[00:23:38] and everyone was yelling,
[00:23:40] What is it?
[00:23:41] What's wrong?
[00:23:42] I tried to explain
[00:23:43] that someone was looking
[00:23:44] in the window,
[00:23:45] but they ran to the street,
[00:23:46] and everyone went to look
[00:23:48] out the windows
[00:23:48] at the front of the house,
[00:23:49] but it was deserted.
[00:23:51] Then I began to describe
[00:23:52] who I saw
[00:23:53] by saying
[00:23:54] that he looked
[00:23:55] just like
[00:23:55] Snidely Whiplash,
[00:23:57] a popular cartoon character,
[00:23:59] and I could see
[00:24:00] the looks on their faces
[00:24:01] change from concern
[00:24:02] to incredulous disbelief.
[00:24:05] Suddenly,
[00:24:05] my parents
[00:24:06] were explaining
[00:24:07] that this was a nightmare,
[00:24:08] and my little brother
[00:24:09] was calling me a jerk,
[00:24:10] and I began to realize
[00:24:12] how embarrassingly stupid
[00:24:13] the words sounded
[00:24:14] as they came out
[00:24:15] of my mouth.
[00:24:16] As we crawled back
[00:24:18] into bed,
[00:24:18] I kept playing it
[00:24:19] over and over
[00:24:20] in my mind,
[00:24:21] seriously questioning
[00:24:22] what I had seen.
[00:24:23] Could it have been
[00:24:24] a dream?
[00:24:25] Did I imagine it?
[00:24:26] It seemed so real.
[00:24:28] Then I remembered something.
[00:24:30] As the figure turned
[00:24:31] and ran for the street,
[00:24:32] there was no sound
[00:24:33] of footsteps,
[00:24:34] but there was a bang.
[00:24:36] On the patio
[00:24:37] outside my window,
[00:24:38] there was a large
[00:24:39] iron glider.
[00:24:40] The sound I heard
[00:24:41] was the sound
[00:24:42] of someone
[00:24:43] banging into the side
[00:24:44] of it,
[00:24:45] causing the moving seat
[00:24:46] to bang against
[00:24:47] one side of the frame
[00:24:49] and then the other.
[00:24:50] I've heard that sound
[00:24:51] a hundred times.
[00:24:52] I kept thinking
[00:24:54] about that figure
[00:24:54] with the top hat
[00:24:55] but no face,
[00:24:57] banging into the glider
[00:24:58] and I hoped
[00:24:59] that it hurt.
[00:25:01] The next morning,
[00:25:02] I was out early.
[00:25:03] I was convinced
[00:25:04] that I had imagined
[00:25:05] the whole episode
[00:25:06] and even felt
[00:25:07] a little embarrassed
[00:25:08] about it.
[00:25:09] I was going to forget
[00:25:10] about it
[00:25:11] and hoped everyone
[00:25:11] else would too
[00:25:12] until I noticed
[00:25:14] the glider
[00:25:15] had been moved
[00:25:15] a good eight inches
[00:25:16] and it was now
[00:25:17] non-parallel
[00:25:18] to the house.
[00:25:19] The reason this
[00:25:21] was so noticeable
[00:25:21] was the fact
[00:25:23] that my dad
[00:25:23] was obsessed
[00:25:24] with the location
[00:25:25] of that glider
[00:25:26] and every time
[00:25:27] it was moved,
[00:25:28] even an inch,
[00:25:29] he'd make a point
[00:25:30] to carefully move it back
[00:25:31] and then let everyone
[00:25:32] know he had moved it back
[00:25:33] and warn us about it.
[00:25:35] As I said,
[00:25:37] the glider was iron
[00:25:38] and heavy
[00:25:38] and left four
[00:25:39] small rust marks
[00:25:40] on the pavers
[00:25:41] where it sat.
[00:25:43] He could live
[00:25:44] with the four
[00:25:44] small rust marks
[00:25:45] but he was adamant
[00:25:47] about avoiding more.
[00:25:49] It was a bit of work
[00:25:50] for a nine-year-old
[00:25:51] to move the heavy glider
[00:25:52] back to where it belonged
[00:25:53] and dad heard steel
[00:25:55] dragging on the pavers
[00:25:56] and came out to check
[00:25:58] on what I was doing.
[00:25:59] For half a second,
[00:26:00] I thought about
[00:26:01] telling him about the noise
[00:26:02] and the moved glider
[00:26:04] but I vividly remembered
[00:26:05] the look on his face
[00:26:06] when I tried to tell him
[00:26:07] the story the night before
[00:26:09] and I just said nothing.
[00:26:11] For a long time,
[00:26:12] I thought about
[00:26:13] what I had seen
[00:26:14] as unbelievable
[00:26:15] as it was.
[00:26:16] I thought that perhaps
[00:26:17] it was a prank
[00:26:18] by a neighbor
[00:26:19] but it just didn't fit.
[00:26:21] The prankster
[00:26:21] would have to be
[00:26:22] almost six feet tall
[00:26:23] and who would dress up
[00:26:25] like that
[00:26:25] and then creep around
[00:26:26] long after midnight
[00:26:27] and stand silently
[00:26:28] outside a window
[00:26:29] waiting for someone
[00:26:30] to randomly wake up?
[00:26:32] And back then,
[00:26:33] no one ever kept a secret.
[00:26:34] More than one person
[00:26:36] would certainly
[00:26:36] have to be involved
[00:26:37] and who could resist
[00:26:38] telling everyone
[00:26:39] how they scared
[00:26:40] a nine-year-old kid?
[00:26:42] No,
[00:26:43] it wasn't a prank
[00:26:44] and it certainly
[00:26:45] wasn't a real man
[00:26:45] in a top hat.
[00:26:47] It had to be a dream
[00:26:48] and I kept it to myself.
[00:26:51] One time years later
[00:26:52] when I was in my late teens,
[00:26:54] I was with friends
[00:26:55] late at night
[00:26:56] sitting around a fire
[00:26:57] telling ghost stories.
[00:26:59] Maybe it was the beer
[00:27:00] or the desire
[00:27:01] to contribute
[00:27:02] to the conversation
[00:27:03] but I began
[00:27:04] to tell this story
[00:27:05] but I saw the same look
[00:27:06] on everyone's faces
[00:27:07] and I knew
[00:27:08] I was making a mistake.
[00:27:10] I turned it into
[00:27:11] a corny joke
[00:27:12] and vowed never
[00:27:13] to mention it again.
[00:27:15] 56 years later,
[00:27:17] your podcast
[00:27:18] made it seem
[00:27:19] more believable.
[00:27:20] Thank you for letting me
[00:27:21] tell my story.
[00:27:22] Finally.
[00:27:26] As we come to the end
